Not
surprisingly, Táhirih was soon put under house arrest in the
home of Tehran's chief of police, and in August 1852, by order of the
government was secretly executed.
On the day of her death, at the age of 36, she dressed as a bride, and
was taken to a walled garden, where the guards removed her scarf from
her face and wrapped it around her neck, brutally strangling her until
her last breath. Then they took her body and threw it into an abandoned
well and covered it with rocks, hoping that her remains would be forgotten.
But her story lives on despite their efforts. Her last words before
she died were
“You can kill me if you like but you cannot
stop the emancipation of women”
