Maria Chaniotaki was born in Heraklion, Crete. She studied civil engineering, as well as music and piano. She completed a Master in Theatre Design at the Wimbledon School of Art in London, U.K, as well as taking seminars in Theatre Design at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), London. Since 1990 she has worked as a Theatre Designer for theatre and dance performances and has been teaching Theatre Design and Performance Art since 2000.

She is a member of "The Society of British Theatre Designers" (SBTD), the "International Institute of Theatre"(IIT) and the "The Chamber of Fine Art of Greece” (EETE).

She has also had 3 of her books published.
